VANESSA

"Hello." Vanessa offered her hand to the plump blond woman waiting alongside her in the underground parking lot. "I'm Vanessa."

"No English." The woman patted her chest. "Isla."

"Oh, yes. You are Sofia's aunt."

"Sofia. Yes." Her expression turned grim. "No good."

"She's transitioning. She will be good."

They both nodded and then turned to look at the door to the large vehicle lift.

Lusha wasn't the only human arriving from Safe Haven. A couple of members of Igor's former compound had decided to move to the village, and they were the woman's relatives. Vanessa knew who she was, but the name eluded her.

William had promised to work on a new earpiece tech that would provide an instantaneous translation. The technology was available, but it was clunky, and everyone knew that William could do better if he only had the time to dedicate to the task.

But there was only one of him, and no matter how many new assistants he trained, no one seemed sufficiently capable to just take a new project and run with it without William having to be the brain behind it.

When the elevator doors opened, and the limousine pulled out, Isla released a happy squeak and rushed to intercept it.

Okidu hit the brakes just in time to avoid hitting her, and a moment later, the back door opened, and a teenage girl jumped out.

As the two embraced and tears started flowing, another woman and another teenager got out of the vehicle and joined the tearful reunion.

Vanessa guessed the older woman was Isla's sister and the younger teen was her daughter.

The last one to emerge from the limo was Lusha.

Dark-haired, short, with a pleasant round face and thick glasses, she looked more like a kindergarten teacher than a lawyer. The plain jeans and pink T-shirt added to the impression, but appearances could be deceptive, and the sweet exterior could cover a shark's personality.

Or at least Vanessa hoped so. Mo-red and the others needed a strong defender who wasn't easily intimidated.

"Hi." The girl walked around the tearful four. "I'm Lusha." She offered Vanessa her hand.

"I'm Vanessa. Welcome to the village."

"Thank you." She took a deep breath. "Hannele, Lana, and Jessica are so excited. They were a little disappointed with life at Safe Haven, and they missed Isla and Jarmo."

"I can imagine."

After living with the Kra-ell and being immersed in their culture, the free-love philosophy of Safe Haven shouldn't have been too foreign to the human females who had been having sex with the Kra-ell males without expecting any commitment. But perhaps they'd expected a more vital community and had been disappointed with how remote and isolated the place was.

"How about you?" she asked Lusha. "Did you like it at Safe Haven?"

"It was okay. A bit boring, though. The only jobs we could have there were housekeeping and gardening, and neither were what I wanted to do with my life." Lusha turned to look at Okidu, who was pulling everyone's luggage out of the trunk. "I should help him."

"Don't." Vanessa put a hand on her shoulder.
